In aircraft sheetmetal,What is the correct configuration between HL collars,KFN nuts, titanium,& steel Hi-loks?
some people are saying there are dissimilar metals in play but I always used collars…I really dont see the need for steel collars unless your installing in tension applications, the question is regarding shear applications only
I spent some time at Mc Donnell-Douglas building the C-17. All the Hi-loks and lock bolts we used were titanium. We used aluminum collars on the lock bolts and either titanium or steel nuts over aluminum washers with the Hi-loks depending on application. I agree that steel collars aren’t really needed unless there is a high tension application. As for the dissimilar metals argument, we used an aluminum-lithium alloy that was specifically designed for use with titanium fasteners and once sealed and painted, corrosion is supposed to be nonexistent. As for dissimilar metals on the fasteners, MDAC didn’t seem concerned about it and my reference books don’t say much as to titanium fasteners with collars and nuts of other metals.
