looking for a kids novel set in ww2, about iron/tin statues.

i read this book about 15 years ago at primary school. its a children’s book novel. basically all i remember is:

- set in a small town in Germany (??) during world war 2
- about a young boy who somehow ends up with a German soldier / officer living in his house.
- the soldier played the flute
- becasue of the war, everything that was made out of iron was being seized and taken away to be melted down.
- there was a clock tower in the town that had statues of patron saints (or something similar) at the top that were made out of iron, and the soldiers in the town decided to seize them
- the little boy loved the statues and didn’t want them to be taken, so he stole them from the tower and hid them in the back of a cupboard / wardrobe in the spare room of his house – the room the soldier ends up staying in
- i think the soldier finds them and for some reason (the boy convinces him) he doesn’t turn the statues over
