What is the dirty air that Rusty Wallace keeps talking about?
It mainly affects the cars at what is know as a “down force” track. It’s when they are running fast enough to need a steady load of air on the car to create the forces needed to give the car maximum traction.
Dirty air is turbulent and does not provide constant down force on the car. The car out front has constant down force and the car handles much more consistently and has maximum grip. A car back in turbulent (dirty) air is getting bits and pieces of it and they basically have to slow down a little or their car will lose traction (either pushing or loose).
You will hear the drivers reporting that they are aero-tight or aero-loose which means the car is handling bad when they get behind other cars.
This is different from drafting (tucked in a line with two or more cars). At super speedways such as Daytona or Talladega handling isn’t as important and since the motors are “restricted” they will tuck in a line and “draft” off of each other cutting through the air more efficiently thus increasing speeds.
