Ron Hornaday scored his third victory of the season at the O’Reilly 200 and jumped ahead in the Craftsman Point series.
Hornaday looked dominate the whole night leading the final 129 laps. Driving the Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet, he had started from the third position. Hornaday passed pole sitter Johnny Benson on the 44th lap. Hornaday described the pass by stating that after Benson got loose in the turn, he got into the back of him to make the pass. Hornaday said he didn’t want to pass Benson that way and he takes the blame.
Benson was leading the series but had to drop out after 84 laps due to engine problems. He ended up finishing 33rd and fell three places in the Series Championship.
Erik Darnell finished second in his Roush Fenway Racing Ford. Matt Crafton finished third in his ThorSport Racing Chevrolet. Crafton moved up a spot in the series and now sits only 27 points behind Hornaday. Darnell is charging hard in the series. His second place finish was his fifth top five finish of the season. Darnell moved up one spot in the series and now sits in seventh. If Darnell continues the season with similar performances, watch for him to continue to move up in the series.
With this victory, Benson now has 36 career victories in the Craftsman series, more than any other driver. The top five in the series are only separated by 74 points. Benson leads the series, second is Matt Crafton, Todd Bodine is in third, and Benson is in fourth with Rick Crawford in fifth.
