How to create a Racing Team?

Well I’m still a kid in the automotive field, I’m 19 studying automotive engineering at the university and want to do something really cool. I’m not talking about the F1, GTR or NASCAR. Lower caliber, like F3, and others. I need someone who have the knowledge and can give me an idea of how to start from low budget racing events to something professional. How those things function? About the money the team itself? I am talking about indy cars or touring Car Racing. Thanks

The best way to make small fortune in Auto Racing is start with a large fortune. Even lower tier weekend warrior stuff can get pricey. Your best bet is to start out with karts, or some SCCA solo stuff to see how your skills compare to other drivers. For karts you’ll still need several a grand or two or three to for the kart itself, spares, and entry fees. For real cars it get’s more expensive. Spec series like Spec Miata or Spec Focus, aren’t a bad place to start for competitive racing, but the costs go up. Figure on spending about $20k a year at least. Some established teams offer lease plans, and some are all inclusive for consumables and race/tech support. When you get into Indy cars, even Indy Lights are much much pricier. You need to be rich and/or have sponsorship, I’m not 100% sure about what it costs now, but it used to run $25k-$45k to lease a car for one race. Double that for an IRL weekend.
