Why are all the cast members in the Lord of the Rings movies all white?
I’m not racist or hating the movies or anything but I was wondering why are all the people in all 3 movies are white? There are no people of other races in the trilogy, its kinda odd if you ask me. I loved the movies dont get me wrong but I just dont like the idea of having an all white cast when a trilogy of this scale could have been more diverse.
Seeing as the movies were based on books by Tolkien, Peter Jackson was trying to stay as true to the story as possible. To elaborate on what Laheira 2 said, Tolkien based much of his language, story line and environment on Norse, Anglo-saxon and Scandinavian cultures. These races were known for their pale/fair coloring. When Tolkien talks about races in his books, their are some like the Rohirrim, that he specifically details their appearance: “The horses were of great stature, strong and clean-limbed; their grey coats glistened, their long tails flowed in the wind, their manes were braided on their proud necks. The Men that rode them matched them well: tall and long-limbed, their hair, flaxen-pale, flowed under their light helms, and streamed in long braids behind them; their faces were stern and keen.” But, there are others that he may describe as sturdy & robust like the Dwarves; pale, tall & lean like the Elves (Tolkien’s Elves were actually quite tall, unlike what many people think as Elves as being small creatures); short of stature like the Hobbits. But does not specify a skin tone as a general rule; though the Haradrim of the south were darker skinned, they are only briefly covered in the movie (they are the Men riding the Oliphaunt (elephants) in one of the big battle scenes) because they are only briefly covered in the book. There was A LOT left out of the movies that was in the book(s). It would probably take Jackson at least 3 more movies, if he covered everything in LOTR.
Many people think that Tolkien wrote LOTR because of the war and the invading German army. But Tolkien himself contested this. So, it is believed that Tolkien basis for LOTR was because he was horrified by the industrial revolution’s encroachment into the lush countryside of England. And you can see this symbolism throughout the book. The green lushness of the Shire in contrast to the destruction of the Ents and the forest, the smoke billowing from the earth as the Orcs dug & destroyed.
Tolkien spends much time detailing things in Middle Earth that are of the light; the green of the Shire, the golden trees in Lothlorien; there are many references to gold, white, green, silver, pale blue; perhaps to give the feeling of something ethereal, a place filled with light and joy. But, let us not forget the red fires of Mount Doom and the dark and shadowy Ring-wraiths. Tolkien is creating a contrast, NOT to be prejudice, but rather to create a feeling. When the Hobbits (any of us) are at their darkest hour, they reach for the light in life. The darkness that Sauron & Saruman spread is like a black plague that oozes out across Middle Earth, threatening the lives of all. It is at the darkest of times that a small light shines brightest: Galadriel to Frodo “In this phial is caught the light of Earendil’s star…” “…It will shine still brighter when night is about you. May it be light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.” It is this light that saves Sam & Frodo from Shelob. I believe Tolkien was setting a mood, and if you have ever read LOTR, it is abundantly clear, you can feel the constant battle of light versus dark, good versus evil. His imagery is beautiful, his character timeless and the story unforgettable.
So, I don’t believe Tolkien was prejudice, nor was Peter Jackson’s interpretation in the movies.
