Weeping Willow tree and cast iron sewer line?
I would like to plant a weeping willow tree along the bank of the creek at the back of our property. Our new sewer line (pvc or abs) attaches to the cast iron main city line which is situated in the creek. (don’t know why the city placed it there) Will it be safe to plant the tree since there will be a constant source of water from the creek or would the roots endanger the lines? If I can plant the tree there, how far should it be from the sewer lines? There are large trees along most of the creek but not where I want to plant this tree.
The roots of the typical Weeping Willow will reach out as far as the canopy of the tree. The main roots also are very shallow and stay within the top 10 feet of the ground, which is why Willows are uprooted so easily from heavy winds and are not often found growing near water. Eventually, the roots could be 15-20 feet in all directions from the center of the tree. There are different tree variants, too, (Dwarf, etc.) which will depend on the size of the tree, but I would generally plant it at least 35 feet from the sewer line. Trees also get oxygen from the soil, and many do not like constantly wet feet. A pond or creek raising temporarily from a rain is ok, but planting the tree next to the water source that could cause the roots to be constantly sitting in water could rot the roots and possibly kill the tree (I know this from personal experience). Nature does a pretty good job of providing ground water to trees in nature, so I wouldn’t worry about it getting enough water after you get it started. Here’s a good website to check out.

Addition: Just because someone has one story of a tree surviving adverse conditions does not mean it is wise to plant it in those conditions. Since you have control of this, I would suggest giving it the best start you can.
