How To Start An Autograph Collection

Autograph collecting can be a great pastime. Having a collection in front of you can remind you of just how much you admire your favourite celebrity. Apart from being a fun hobby, autograph collecting can also be potentially profitable. In order to create a good collection you need to be confident enough to approach a celebrity to ask for their autograph without being too pushy. This can take time, patience and diplomacy therefore autograph collecting is not for everyone. But if you do think you have what it takes to start collecting then where do you start?

Firstly you need to consider who autographs you would value the most and which autographs would create a good collection. You may want to target sports stars, movie or TV stars or perhaps political figures?  This is a highly personal choice and will depend on what you are interested in generally. It will also help if you already have some background knowledge of the field as this will make collecting and researching celebrities a little easier. You will need to consider what sort of people you most admire and why before beginning on your quest to build an autograph collection.

Next you need to educate yourself on the world of celebrity autographs to get an idea of what is available, what is considered valuable, how things are priced and what is likely to most appeal to you. You can also take this opportunity to do some research on your chosen field and familiarise yourself with how certain celebrities autographs should look.   

Once you have done all this you can actually start on the fun bit: collecting! It is a good idea to keep track of events in your area which may feature celebrity guests such as shop openings, fund raisers, book signings and plays or concerts. These are all perfect opportunities for autograph signings. After these types of events there is often time set aside for question and answer sessions and autographs so you can take advantage of these opportunities.

If you are lucky enough to get the chance to ask your favourite celebrity for their autograph in person then you should be sure to speak clearly and politely. Don’t keep the celebrity hanging around as this may annoy them, after all you are not the only fan around! If by any chance they refuse your request for an autograph always be gracious and polite.

If for whatever reason you can’t see your favourite star in person then the best alternative is to get autographs in the post. This simple involves you finding contact details and composing a short, polite request for an autograph. Make sure you include some material to be signed such as photographs; magazine covers etc and always make sure that you include a self-addressed stamped envelope to make it easier for the star to send you an autograph.

Once you start to build up a collection then you need to make sure that you keep your collection safe and organised in a scrap book or some other organised way. You need to keep your autographs out of direct sunlight and away from moisture as this can cause damage and devalue your collection.
